Stormwater Pollution Prevention

Why is Stormwater a Concern?
Storm water runoff is rain water and snow melt that runs off the land and enters streams, rivers, and lakes. Storm water runoff can contain toxic chemicals, oil and grease, pesticides, metals, and other contaminants that are a major source of water pollution and that can pose a threat to public health and the environment. Airport tenants are required to do their part to protect our waters by taking steps to prevent storm water pollution. To protect our water resources, the DuPage Airport Authority is required by the Illinois EPA to obtain a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit and to maintain a  Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).

What is an NPDES Permit?
NPDES permits regulate wastewater discharges, such as storm water, into the waters of the United States. In general, the permit sets limitations on what can be discharged to a lake, stream or river.

DuPage Airport Authority General NPDES Permit
The DuPage Airport Authority maintains a General NPDES Permit, assuming the role of principal permittee while Airport tenants are identified as co-permittees under the Permit.

Permit Requirements for Airport Tenants
As required by the Airport's NPDES Permit and Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP), Airport tenants are required to:

  • Complete an initial and annual Stormwater Pollution Prevention Survery

  • Implement best management practices

  • Participate in the Airport's Stormwater Pollution Prevention Team (SASO tenants)

  • Attend annual training (Stormwater Pollution Prevention Team)

  • Educate employees about Stormwater Pollution Prevention

  • SWPPP facility inspection(s)

Annual Surveys - Must be completed prior to December 31, 2008
