DuPage Airport Installs New Security System Working closely with Federal, State, and local law enforcement agencies, the DuPage Airport recently installed a new security system throughout the entire airfield, which is above and beyond requirements set forth in TSA (Transportation Security Administration) recommendations.  DPA exceeds the vast majority of general aviation airports in security measures.  Included in the upgrade are the following: new cameras, fencing and gates - providing management with a virtual secure perimeter, access control and lock system upgrades, personnel and vehicle identification systems, and enhanced threat communication systems.

Bombers and Plane Pull Return to DuPage Airport  The Collings Foundation Wings of Freedom Tour once again brought historic aviation to DPA for the weekend of July 20 - 23, 2007.  Three of America's most famous WWII bomber aircraft were on display, including the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, and the B-25 Mitchell.  This year's tour drew over 6,000 people for walk-through tours and flight experiences.  Moreover, a Plane Pull added to the weekend with teams of 10 trying to pull a Gulfstream IV-SP 15 feet in the shortest amount of time.  All proceeds for the Plane Pull went to the Special Olympics Illinois.

Golf Tip

Do You "S-H-E"?  Stroke, Hold and Evaluate your short shots.  When I watch players practice chipping and pitching, I often see a rapid-fire approach.  This is when a shot is hit and before the ball gets two feet forward, the player reaches for another chance to hit a good shot.  Learning to be a better chipper and pitcher requires feedback from the result, whether good or bad.

Chipping and pitching requires a good technique but an even better imagination.  The short shots are all about controlling the trajectory of the ball.  Controlling the trajectory determines the amount the ball will roll.  Players need to be able to visualize a landing spot and height of the shot. Then choose the club and stroke for that landing spot.

When practicing, be very clear and focused in your approach to short shots.  After the stroke, hold your finish until the ball comes to rest.  This will give you an opportunity to ask yourself:

  • Did I hit my spot and did I get the result I wanted?
  • If so, what did it feel like?
  • If not, was it the proper trajectory?
  • Did I choose the proper club for the shot?
  • Were the mechanics of my stroke the cause?
  • Was the stroke too big or too fast?

Hitting golf shots is like playing catch with a ball, if you throw the ball over the other persons head you get immediate feedback and you adjust on the next throw.  If you hit golf balls and don't give yourself time to evaluate the results it is more challenging to learn from your practice.
